How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?

Majoring in English with a concentration in journalism prepared me for my career because it taught me how to handle every situation. I had to take a variety of courses as an English major; literature, grammar and style, editing, design, and journalism specific class. All of the classes prepared me for my career as a content marketing specialist at Spyderserve Web Services. I do a lot of different things at my job and being an English major taught me how to juggle different types of tasks at once.

How has majoring in English enriched your life?

Majoring in English has enriched my life in so many ways. Most importantly, it taught me how to write for different audiences. At my current job, I write content and do marketing for different websites. Writing for a dentist's website is very different than writing for a cattle company's website, so I utilize the skills I learned as an English major. I know how to effectively communicate with different audiences which ultimately results in a happy client and better results on their website.

What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?

You have to embrace change. Original plans can change at the blink of an eye, but the outcome can be tremendous for your future. As an English major and a Spectator Editor, there were constant changes in the classroom setting and the office. Whether it was a change in our design or a change in a literary journalism piece, we embraced it. Learn from your mistakes, embrace change, and don't be afraid to try something new.
